I joined Cambridge University Engineering Department in 1985 as a MPhil student on the Computer Speech and Language Processing course which ran from 1985 to 2000. I then progressed though a PhD (``Dynamic Error Propagation Networks''), Research Assistant, SERC Advanced Research Fellowship, and finally University Lecturer, a post which I held until October 2000.

In this time I taught most aspects of speech processing (speech pattern processing, speech recognition, speech analysis, speech systems, search and language modelling), worked with many excellent people including my PhD students the WERNICKE, SPRACH and THISL projects.

I wrote shorten (lossless audio compressor) co-founded the newsgroup comp.speech and organised the split into comp.speech.research and comp.speech.users. There remains a FTP site for the comp.speech at ftp://svr-ftp.eng.cam.ac.uk/pub/comp.speech.

In 1995 I founded SoftSound Ltd and in October 2000 I left Cambridge University to run the company full time.
